When you purchase a Powerball ticket on the U.S. Virgin Islands, you are helping to support communities throughout the territory. The VI Lottery is now recognized as one of the top producers of revenue for the territory, and has benefited the lives of thousands of islanders.
Among the beneficiaries have been the Education Initiative Fund, the Pharmaceutical Assistance Progam, the GERS Retirees Bonus Program, local non-profit organizations, the Horse Race Commission and the Office of Veterans Affairs.
Powerball was launched in the U.S. Virgin Islands on November 14, 2002, ahead of the drawing two days later. The territory’s participation was approved by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) following a series of negotiations as the VI Lottery looked for a way to boost revenue. The VI Lottery was established in 1937, making it the oldest continuous lottery in the U.S., and the arrival of Powerball has helped the territory to generate $1.5 million for public schools every year and provide vital funds for many other areas.
The U.S. Virgin Islands has not yet celebrated a jackpot winner but multiple players have landed second-tier prizes. Some of those winners have also added Power Play to double their prize to $2 million, including one lucky participant who bought their ticket from Pharmacy One on St. Thomas on January 5, 2013, and another player who won $2 million in the famous $758 million drawing on August 23, 2017.
